Irrigation
Modern Water-Based Removal
Ear irrigation is a technique that uses a controlled flow of water at body temperature to gently flush out ear wax. Modern irrigation methods are much safer and more comfortable than older "syringing" techniques.
How Irrigation Works:
- The ear is examined to ensure it's suitable for irrigation
- Water at body temperature is prepared to prevent dizziness
- A specialized electronic irrigator delivers a controlled stream of water into the ear canal
- The water flows behind the wax and helps flush it out
- A collection basin captures the water and removed wax
- The ear is checked to ensure wax removal is complete
Benefits of Irrigation:
- Effective for softer wax: Works well when wax has been pre-softened
- Comfortable experience: Most patients find it gentle and painless
- Thorough removal: Can clear larger amounts of wax effectively
When Irrigation Is Not Recommended:
While safe for many patients, irrigation is not suitable for everyone. We avoid this method if you have:
- A history of perforated eardrum
- Had ear surgery in the past
- Grommets or other ear tubes
Our nurses will carefully assess your ear health history before recommending irrigation.
